Netflix On Vine - The Threads

The Netflix Workplace Team partnered with Gensler DXD to integrate technology within the visitor lobby of their new Netflix on Vine offices in LA. The Threads concept was built to mimic the iconic intro for each Netflix show in real space.

The project was in full swing Summer 2020, bringing Covid related considerations to for forefront. We utilized flexible partners and clear start/stop communication to manage the lengthened timelines. Ultimately, an amazing installation came to life on budget and as close to a deadline as a global pandemic would allow.

Driving the team through design, vendor sourcing and selection, prototyping, construction coordination, and final install was a great distraction during such a hard time. The team that worked on this project are truly legends and it splitters into two other projects with the Netflix team; the Tokyo lobby & Digital Twins.

Prototype

Eleven custom extruded tubes were integrated into room dividers that spanned the long and lean layout of the space.

Through prototyping, we explored materiality, color difussion options, and validated cooling design. Alongside the physical testing, we confirmed the touchdesigner backend would run the system as-designed.

Install & Testing

When paired with The Wall display featured in the first section of the room, The Threads mirrored the colors on the display and carried the Netflix content throughout the space.

Bringing The Threads into the Lobby was a very exciting point in this project process. While installing them in the space, we were able to test and map colors perfectly to align to the content on screen.

This was the first installation from the Gensler DXD LA team, so there was an extra layer of excitement connected to bringing it to life.
